Anthropic Raises Claude Max Pricing to $150/Month

Anthropic raised Claude Max pricing from $100 to $150/month this week — a 50% increase that makes it the most expensive mainstream consumer AI subscription. The hike affects roughly 200,000 subscribers who use Max for heavy Claude Computer Use workflows, Claude Code development, and high-volume API-equivalent usage.

The Pro tier ($20/month) is unchanged. The Max tier, which offers 5x higher rate limits than Pro and access to Claude Computer Use without daily caps, is the only affected plan. Existing subscribers keep the old $100 pricing through August 2026; new subscribers pay $150 effective immediately.

Why the increase

Anthropic cited three factors in their announcement:

• Increased compute costs. Claude 4 Opus, the model that powers Max, is significantly more expensive to run than earlier models. Heavy Computer Use workflows generate substantial compute load.
• Demand outpacing capacity. Max subscribers have been hitting rate limits frequently, suggesting the tier is underpriced relative to usage patterns.
• Investment in capacity. Anthropic is investing heavily in additional compute infrastructure, and the price increase helps fund that expansion.

Who should care

The price increase matters most for users on Max who don't fully utilize the tier's capabilities. If you're paying $100/month for Max but only occasionally hitting Pro's rate limits, the increase to $150/month should prompt a serious evaluation of whether you actually need Max.

For users who regularly hit Max's rate limits — typically heavy Computer Use users running 5+ parallel workflows daily — the increase is painful but the value proposition remains. $150/month for unlimited Claude Computer Use is still dramatically cheaper than the human labor equivalent.
